This Coats & Clark gold color thread is perfect. It's a little thicker than regular thread but looks awesome for hems.

This thread does not list a weight on the spool. It is 100% polyester. I use it for garments and piecing quilts. I have also used it for machine quilting with no problems. All-purpose. That being said, I only use dual duty thread. Not the all-purpose spools. The dual duty leaves very little dust on the feed dogs and I have never experienced a slub on the thread.
